How to Use Trigger Links in Emails

Trigger links allow you to track email clicks and trigger automated workflow actions when a contact clicks a specific link.

Who This Is For / When to Use

Use trigger links when you want an email click to:

  • Be logged on a contact’s activity timeline

  • Trigger a specific workflow action

  • Redirect the contact to a defined web address at the same time


What Is a Trigger Link

A trigger link is a special hyperlink used in emails.

When a contact clicks the link:

  • The click is recorded in the contact’s activity timeline

  • A predefined workflow action is triggered

  • The contact is redirected to the configured web address

Trigger links are reusable across emails, workflows, and templates.


Where Trigger Links Can Be Used

Trigger links are available in the following locations:

  • Contacts

  • Conversations

  • Workflows

  • Email Campaigns

  • Email Templates


Part 1: Using Trigger Links in Contacts and Conversations

Steps

  1. Navigate to Contacts and open a specific contact.

    • Alternatively, navigate to Conversations and open a conversation.

  2. Open the Email tab.

  3. Click the Link icon in the email composer.

  4. In the Embed Link window, select Trigger Link as the link type.

  5. Choose a trigger link from the dropdown list.

    • The Web Address field auto-populates.

  6. Enter the Link Text that will appear in the email.

  7. Select the link behavior and click Save.

Notes

  • Trigger links added this way appear as clickable text in the email body.

  • Clicks are tracked automatically.


Part 2: Using Trigger Links in Workflows

Steps

  1. Navigate to Automations > Workflows.

  2. Click Create Workflow or edit an existing workflow.

  3. Add or edit a Send Email action.

  4. Type your email content.

  5. Highlight the text you want to hyperlink and click the Add Link icon.

  6. Select the Tag icon and choose Trigger Links.

  7. Select the desired trigger link.

    • The URL field auto-populates.

  8. Save the link, the email action, and the workflow.


Part 3: Using Trigger Links in Email Campaigns and Templates

Steps

  1. Navigate to Marketing > Emails > Campaigns or Templates.

  2. Create or edit an email.

  3. Click inside a text element.

  4. Highlight the text you want to link and click the Link icon.

  5. Select the Tag icon and choose Trigger Links.

  6. Select the trigger link and save the email.


Creating a New Trigger Link

If no trigger links exist yet:

  1. Navigate to Marketing > Trigger Links > Links.

  2. Click Add Link.

  3. Configure the destination URL and workflow action.

  4. Save the trigger link.

Once created, the trigger link becomes available across Contacts, Workflows, Campaigns, and Templates.


Common Issues and Fixes

Trigger link does not appear in the dropdown

  • Ensure the trigger link has been created under Marketing > Trigger Links > Links.

  • Refresh the page and reopen the editor.

Link click is not triggering a workflow

  • Confirm the workflow is published.

  • Verify the workflow trigger is configured to listen for the selected trigger link.

Cannot hyperlink trigger link in Conversations

  • Hyperlinking trigger links is not supported in Conversations at this time.

  • Use direct trigger link insertion instead.
