Using Pre-Built Segments in Email Campaigns

Pre-Built Segments let you quickly target contacts based on recent email engagement directly from the Send or Schedule screen without creating custom segments.

Updated over 2 months ago

Who This Is For / When to Use

This article is for users who want to send more targeted email campaigns based on contact engagement.

Use this when:

  • You want to email only engaged or disengaged contacts.

  • You want faster segmentation without manual filters.

  • You are sending campaigns from Email Marketing.

What Problem Pre-Built Segments Solve

Previously, contacts could not be automatically segmented based on email engagement.

This made it difficult to:

  • Target highly engaged contacts.

  • Re-engage inactive subscribers.

  • Exclude disengaged contacts from campaigns.

Pre-Built Segments solve this by making engagement-based targeting available at send time.

What Are Pre-Built Segments

Pre-Built Segments are ready-made contact groups based on recent email interaction.

Available segments include:

  • Contacts engaged in the last 7 days

  • Contacts engaged in the last 30 days

  • Contacts engaged in the last 60 days

  • Subscribers engaged in the last 5 campaigns

  • Subscribers disengaged in the last 5 campaigns

Engaged means the contact opened or clicked an email sent via:

  • Email Marketing Campaigns

  • Workflow emails

  • Bulk email actions

Where to Find Pre-Built Segments

Pre-Built Segments are available only on the Send or Schedule screen of an Email Campaign.

They are not created or edited separately.

How to Use Pre-Built Segments

  1. Navigate to Marketing → Email Marketing → Campaigns.

  2. Create a new Email Campaign or open an existing one.

  3. Click Send or Schedule.

  4. In the Recipient (To) section, select Pre-Built Segments.

  5. Open the segment dropdown.

  6. Choose the desired segment.

  7. Click Send or Schedule.

How Segmentation Timing Works

Pre-Built Segments are evaluated:

  • At the time of scheduling, not at send execution.

This means:

  • The contact list is locked when the campaign is scheduled.

  • Engagement changes after scheduling are not reflected.

Dynamic, execution-time updates are planned for a future release.

Why Pre-Built Segments Matter

  • Targeted messaging: Send relevant content to active contacts.

  • Re-engagement: Identify and message disengaged subscribers.

  • Efficiency: Avoid sending emails to low-value audiences.

  • Speed: No filters or setup required.

Common Issues and Fixes

I don’t see Pre-Built Segments

Ensure you are on the Send or Schedule screen of an Email Campaign.

Contacts changed after scheduling but weren’t updated

This is expected. Segments are evaluated only at scheduling time.

I need a custom segment

Use Smart Lists or contact filters instead. Pre-Built Segments cannot be edited.
