Updated over 3 months ago

Who This Is For / When to Use

This article is for Kyrios users who send bulk emails, workflow emails, or campaign emails and need to manage unsubscribe compliance, customization, or placement.

What Is an Email Unsubscribe Link?

An unsubscribe link allows contacts to opt out of future marketing emails from your business.

It is legally required under email compliance laws such as CAN-SPAM (U.S.) and GDPR (EU).

Kyrios enforces unsubscribe functionality to protect sender reputation and ensure compliance.

Default Unsubscribe Link Behavior

By default, Kyrios automatically adds an unsubscribe link to the bottom of eligible emails with the text:

“If you no longer wish to receive these emails, you may click here to unsubscribe.”

This default behavior is:

  • Enabled by default

  • Automatically enforced

  • Applied to all supported email types

Where Unsubscribe Links Are Enforced

Kyrios enforces unsubscribe links on:

  • Bulk email sends

  • Workflow emails

  • Email Builder bulk sending

Not enforced on:

  • 1-to-1 (manual) email conversations

How to Enable or Disable the Default Unsubscribe Link

  1. Go to Settings → Business Profile

  2. Scroll to the General section

  3. Locate “Make Email compliant by adding an Unsubscribe link in your email”

  4. Check or uncheck the box to enable or disable the default footer link

  5. Click Update Information

How to Customize the Default Unsubscribe Text

  1. In Settings → Business Profile → General

  2. Click Customize next to the unsubscribe setting

  3. Edit the text inside the modal

  4. Do not remove the unsubscribe tag

  5. Click Save

Important:
The unsubscribe tag must remain present for the link to function correctly.

Manually Adding an Unsubscribe Link (Advanced Control)

If you disable the default unsubscribe footer, you must manually include the unsubscribe tag in every email.

Required Tag

{{unsubscribe}}

You can place this tag anywhere in:

  • Email templates

  • Campaign emails

  • Workflow email steps

Failure to include this tag will break compliance.

Using Default vs Manual Unsubscribe (Best Practice)

Do NOT Use Both

If you enable the default unsubscribe footer and manually insert {{unsubscribe}}, the email will contain two unsubscribe links.

This can cause:

  • Visual clutter

  • Recipient confusion

  • Lower engagement rates

Recommended Setup

Choose one method only:

  • Default Footer Link → Simple and automatic

  • Manual Tag Placement → Full design control

What Contacts See When They Unsubscribe

After clicking the unsubscribe link, contacts see a confirmation page with optional feedback reasons and a message confirming removal from the email list.

Resubscribing After Unsubscribing

Kyrios automatically includes a resubscribe link on the unsubscribe success page.

  • No setup required

  • One-click resubscribe

  • Immediately removes the contact from the email Do-Not-Disturb list

This prevents accidental permanent opt-outs.

Legal Compliance Overview

United States – CAN-SPAM Act

Requires all commercial emails to include a clear unsubscribe method.
Enforced by the FTC.

European Union – GDPR

Unsubscribing invokes the Right to Erasure (Article 17).
Fines can reach €20 million or 4% of global revenue.

Kyrios enforces unsubscribe functionality to help prevent violations.
