Granular Unsubscribe Controls for Community Emails

Members can now unsubscribe from specific community email notification types without affecting email preferences for other communities or platform communications.

Who This Is For / When to Use

This guide is for account administrators and community managers who want to understand how members manage email notification preferences. Use this reference to learn how granular opt-out controls prevent accidental, platform-wide email unsubscribes.

What Changed in Community Email Notifications

Community email preferences are now isolated per community and per notification type.

Previously, selecting Unsubscribe in a community email could opt the member out of all account email communications, causing them to miss updates from other communities and account features.

With granular unsubscribe controls, an opt-out action applies strictly to the generating community and the exact notification type (such as a comment mention or a post tagged @everyone). All other notification types for that community as well as emails from other communities and account services remain active.

How Scoped Unsubscribe Works

Members complete a confirmation flow when opting out of specific email notifications.

When a member clicks Unsubscribe inside a community email, the system executes the following steps:

  1. The member is directed to a confirmation page showing the target community name and the specific notification type being turned off.

  1. The member clicks Turn off to confirm the preference change.

  2. The system displays a confirmation screen showing that the specific notification type is disabled for that community.

  1. Future emails matching that specific community and notification category stop. All other community and account emails continue as normal.

How Invalid or Expired Links Display

Invalid, previously used, or expired unsubscribe links automatically prevent system configuration changes.

When a member clicks an invalid or expired link, the system displays an alert page stating: "This unsubscribe link is no longer available. The link may be invalid, expired, or already used. No other notification settings were changed."

No notification settings or account configurations are altered when this message appears.

How to Re-Enable Disabled Email Notifications

Members can reverse an unsubscribe action at any time from their profile settings.

  1. Log in to the account portal.

  2. Select member profile settings and click Notification settings.

  3. Locate the specific community and notification category.

  4. Toggle the disabled notification preference back to the active state.

Common Issues and Fixes

Members Still Receive Emails After Unsubscribing

  • Cause: The member opted out of one specific notification type or community, but another notification type or community triggered a new email.

  • Fix: Direct the member to check their Notification settings in their account profile to review all active notification preferences across each community.

Clicking Unsubscribe Shows "Link No Longer Available"

  • Cause: The link was previously clicked, expired, or corrupted by an email security scanner.

  • Fix: Confirm that no settings were altered by checking the alert screen. Ask the member to manage their email preferences directly through their profile Notification settings.

FAQ

Does unsubscribing from one community affect emails from other communities?

No. Unsubscribe preferences are isolated to the specific community and notification type that generated the message.

Can a member re-enable notifications after opting out?

Yes. Members can log in to their account portal, navigate to Notification settings, and toggle any disabled notification back on at any time.

What happens if an unsubscribe link is clicked twice?

The second attempt will display a notification confirming that the link is no longer available and that no additional account settings were changed
