Who This Is For / When to Use
Use custom credential expiration when certificates should remain valid only for a specific period. This is useful for certifications, licenses, training completions, and other credentials that require renewal or periodic revalidation.
Available Expiration Options
A certificate template can use one of the following expiration rules:
Never: The credential does not expire.
3 Months: The credential expires three months after issuance.
6 Months: The credential expires six months after issuance.
9 Months: The credential expires nine months after issuance.
1 Year: The credential expires one year after issuance.
2 Years: The credential expires two years after issuance.
3 Years: The credential expires three years after issuance.
4 Years: The credential expires four years after issuance.
Custom date: The credential expires on a selected calendar date.
Relative expiration periods are calculated from the credential’s issue date.
Set an Expiration Rule
Go to Memberships.
Open Certificates or Credentials.
Open the certificate template you want to update.
Open the expiration settings.
Select an expiration option.
Configure reminder emails when needed.
Select Save.
New credentials issued from the template will use the saved expiration rule.
Configure Expiration Reminder Emails
You can enable reminder emails that notify recipients before their credential expires.
Turn on Reminder email 1.
Enter the number of days before expiration when the reminder should be sent.
Turn on Reminder email 2 when a second reminder is needed.
Enter the number of days before expiration for the second reminder.
Select Save.
A separate expiration email is sent by default on the day the credential expires. That expiration-day email cannot be disabled or rescheduled.
How Relative Expiration Is Calculated
Relative expiration rules are calculated from the date the credential is issued.
For example, a credential issued from a template with a six-month expiration rule will expire approximately six months after issuance. The expiration settings display the calculated duration before you save the template.
How Fixed-Date Expiration Works
A custom date applies the selected calendar date as the expiration date.
Use a custom date when all credentials issued from the template must expire on the same date. A credential issued after the selected custom date may require the template expiration settings to be updated before issuance.
Time Zone Handling
Credential expiration calculations and reminder scheduling use the applicable account time zone. This helps ensure expiration dates and reminder emails are processed consistently for the account.
Where Expiration Information Appears
Expiration details are displayed in certificate and credential areas, including:
Certificate template lists
Issued credential lists
Expiration settings
Credential details and related modals
A value such as -- indicates that no expiration date is assigned.
Changes to Existing and New Credentials
Expiration settings saved on a template apply to credentials issued after the settings are configured. The provided update does not confirm that changing a template automatically recalculates expiration dates for credentials that were already issued.
Common Issues and Fixes
A newly issued credential does not have an expiration date
Open the certificate template and confirm that an expiration option other than Never is selected. Save the template before issuing another credential.
A reminder email was not sent
Confirm that the reminder is enabled and that the number of days before expiration is entered. Also confirm that the credential has a valid expiration date.
The expiration date is different from the expected date
Check whether the template uses a relative duration or a custom date. Relative durations are calculated from the issue date and processed using the applicable account time zone.
An issued credential still shows the previous expiration rule
Template changes apply to newly issued credentials. The supplied feature details do not confirm automatic recalculation for previously issued credentials.
