Contact Tag Trigger: Configuration Safeguards

Understand built-in safeguards when configuring Contact Tag triggers to prevent unintended workflow behavior.

Who This Is For / When to Use

  • Users creating workflows based on contact tags

  • Teams managing automation at scale

  • Anyone configuring Contact Tag triggers

  • Accounts needing safer workflow activation controls

What These Safeguards Do

Configuration safeguards help prevent unintended workflow triggers and clarify how tag-based automation works.

  • Provide warnings before risky configurations

  • Clarify when triggers will activate

  • Guide users toward correct setup

  • Preserve flexibility for advanced use cases

Retroactive Enrollment Info Banner

This banner explains how Contact Tag triggers behave after publishing a workflow.

  • Appears when a tag is added in trigger filters

  • Clarifies that triggers only apply to new tags added after publish

  • Includes a link to the retroactive enrollment guide

  • Helps users include existing contacts if needed

Banner Behavior

  • Can be dismissed using the close icon

  • Once dismissed, it will not appear again for that user

  • If not dismissed:

    • Displays up to 3 times

    • Stops appearing automatically after that

No Filters Warning

This warning appears when attempting to save a trigger without filters.

  • Trigger activates when no filters are configured

  • Indicates the workflow will run for:

    • Every tag added

    • Every tag removed

    • Across all contacts

Available Actions

  • Add Filter (Recommended):

    • Returns to filter setup

    • Limits trigger behavior

  • Save without filters:

    • Allows broad trigger activation

    • Intended for advanced use cases

How Contact Tag Triggers Work

Contact Tag triggers activate workflows based on tag changes.

  • Trigger fires when:

    • A tag is added

    • A tag is removed

  • Filters define which tags should trigger the workflow

  • Without filters, all tag changes trigger the workflow

When Triggers Apply

Contact Tag triggers only apply to future changes.

  • Only tags added after workflow publish will trigger

  • Existing tagged contacts are NOT included automatically

  • Retroactive enrollment must be used for existing contacts

Common Issues and Fixes

Workflow did not trigger for existing contacts

  • Contact Tag triggers only apply after publishing

  • Use retroactive enrollment to include existing tagged contacts

Workflow is triggering too frequently

  • Check if filters are missing

  • Add specific tag filters to limit trigger conditions

Banner is no longer दिखाई

  • The banner may have been dismissed

  • It also stops appearing after multiple views

FAQ

Do Contact Tag triggers apply to existing contacts?

No. They only apply to tags added after the workflow is published.

How do I include contacts who already have the tag?

Use retroactive enrollment to add existing tagged contacts to the workflow.

What happens if I save without filters?

The workflow will trigger for every tag added or removed across all contacts.

Can I disable the warnings?

The retroactive banner can be dismissed. The no-filter warning can be bypassed by choosing “Save without filters.”

Why is my workflow triggering unexpectedly?

This usually happens when no filters are configured, causing all tag changes to trigger the workflow.
