Updated over 2 months ago

Who This Is For / When to Use

Use the Product Started trigger if you want to:

  • Detect when a contact begins a specific membership or course product

  • Send onboarding or welcome communications at product start

  • Track engagement at the product level (not lesson level)

  • Automate follow-ups, reminders, or internal notifications

What the Product Started Trigger Does

  • Fires when a contact starts a product

  • Applies to memberships and courses

  • Can be limited to specific products using filters

  • Triggers each time a new product is started

Where to Create or Edit a Workflow

  1. Go to Automations → Workflows

  2. Click Create Workflow, or open an existing workflow from the list

How to Add the Product Started Trigger

  1. Inside the workflow canvas, click Add New Trigger

  2. Search for Product Started

  3. Select Product Started under the Courses trigger group

Configuring the Product Started Trigger

  1. Confirm Product Started is selected as the trigger

  2. (Optional but recommended) Add filters

Using Filters (Strongly Recommended)

Why Filters Matter

If no filters are applied:

  • The workflow fires when any product is started

To limit the trigger:

  • Add a Product filter

  • Choose:

    • Is any of → selected product(s)

    • Is none of → excluded product(s)

This prevents unintended enrollments.

Adding Follow-Up Actions

After the trigger fires, you can add actions such as:

  • Email

  • SMS

  • Add Tag

  • Create Task

  • Internal Notification

Example: Send an onboarding email immediately after a product is started.

Using Product Custom Values in Messages

You can personalize messages using product-related custom values.

Examples include:

  • Product Name

  • Membership Name

  • Course Name

To insert them:

  1. Open an Email or SMS action

  2. Click the Custom Values icon in the editor

  3. Select the relevant product fields

Common Use Cases

Welcome or Onboarding Email

Send a welcome message when a contact starts a product.

Example:
“Welcome to [Product Name]! Here’s how to get started.”

Engagement Tracking

Combine Product Started with Product Completed to detect drop-off.

Example:
If product is started but not completed in 7 days, send a reminder.

Upsell or Cross-Sell Automation

Trigger offers for upgrades after a basic product is started.

Example:
“Enjoying [Product Name]? Upgrade for exclusive content.”

Internal Team Notifications

Notify staff when high-value contacts start a premium product.

Example:
Assign a task when a VIP starts a coaching program.

Drip Content Release

Deliver content gradually after the product start date.

Example:
Lesson 1 immediately, Lesson 2 after 24 hours.

Community or Group Invitations

Invite contacts to communities once they begin a product.

Example:
“Join the [Product Name] private community.”

  • Confirm the correct operator (Is any of)

Wrong product triggered the workflow
