Standard Builder: Drag-and-Drop Triggers and Actions

The Standard Workflow Builder now supports drag-and-drop functionality for triggers and actions, allowing you to place steps directly onto the canvas from the sidebar.

Updated over 2 months ago

Who This Is For / When to Use

This update is for users building or editing Workflows who want to:

  • Add triggers or actions faster

  • Reduce repetitive clicking

  • Visually insert steps between existing nodes

  • Build large or complex Workflows more efficiently

Use this feature anytime you are designing or modifying a Workflow in the Standard Builder.

What Changed

You can now:

  • Click and hold a trigger or action from the sidebar

  • Drag it directly onto the Workflow canvas

  • Drop it onto a visible + marker or between existing nodes

A highlighted placeholder appears when hovering over a valid drop location, showing exactly where the step will be inserted.

This is a UI/UX enhancement only. No automation logic has changed.

How to Add a Trigger or Action Using Drag-and-Drop

  1. Open Automations > Workflows.

  2. Open an existing Workflow or create a new one.

  3. Open the Triggers or Actions sidebar.

  4. Click and hold the desired trigger or action.

  5. Drag it onto the canvas.

  6. Hover over a + marker or between nodes until the placeholder appears.

  7. Drop the item into position.

  8. Configure the step settings.

  9. Click Save.

Once saved, the step becomes a fully added node on the canvas.

How Placement Works

You can drop triggers or actions:

  • On a visible + marker

  • Between two connected nodes

  • At the end of a Workflow branch

A highlighted placeholder confirms valid placement before you release the mouse.

Important Behavior

If you exit the Workflow without saving:

  • The dragged action or trigger will not be added

  • The canvas will revert to its last saved state

Always save after configuring a newly added step.

Common Issues and Fixes

Step does not appear after dropping

Cause: The step was not saved.
Fix: Open the step configuration and click Save before exiting the Workflow.

Cannot drop onto a specific area

Cause: The location is not a valid insertion point.
Fix: Look for a visible + marker or wait for the highlighted placeholder before releasing.

FAQ

Does drag-and-drop change how Workflows function?

No. This update only improves how steps are added to the canvas. Workflow logic and execution remain unchanged.

Can I still use the previous click-to-add method?

Yes. Drag-and-drop is an additional option. Existing behavior remains available.

Can I drag steps after they are already added?

No. This feature applies to adding new triggers and actions from the sidebar. Editing or repositioning existing nodes follows the current builder behavior.

What happens if I close the Workflow without saving?

Unsaved steps will not be added. Always click Save after configuring a new trigger or action.
