Who This Is For / When to Use
Use this feature if you need to:
Link custom object records to contacts or other custom objects.
Track relationships such as ownership, roles, or dependencies.
Use association labels in workflows, reporting, and record views.
Accessing Associations for a Custom Object
Open Settings.
Navigate to Custom Objects.
Select the custom object you want to configure.
Click the Associations tab.
Creating an Association
Step 1: Start a New Association
In the Associations tab, click Create Association.
If no associations exist yet, you will see a setup screen prompting you to begin.
Step 2: Select the Object to Associate With
Choose the object you want to associate with:
Another custom object, or
Contacts.
Step 3: Define Association Labels
You can define how records relate by choosing one of the following:
Single label: Uses the same label on both objects.
Example: "Owner"
Pair of labels: Uses different labels on each object.
Example: "Buyer" on one object and "Seller" on the other.
Important rules:
All associations are many-to-many.
The internal label name cannot be changed after creation.
You can create up to 10 association labels between the same object pair.
Step 4: Configure the Relationship
Review the direction and relationship limits shown in the configuration section.
Custom limits are not currently supported.
Step 5: Save the Association
Review the preview.
Click Save to activate the association.
Viewing Associations on a Record
Open any custom object or contact record.
Look at the Related Objects panel on the right-hand side.
All associated records are listed by object type and label.
Associating Two Records
Steps to Associate Records
Open the detail view of a record.
In the Related Objects panel, click the Add or association icon.
Select the object or contact to associate.
Choose one or more available association labels.
Click Save.
Limits:
Each association label can link up to 1,000 records.
Editing an Association Label
Go to Settings > Custom Objects > Associations.
Locate the association label.
Click the three-dot menu.
Select Edit.
Update the display name if needed.
Notes:
The internal name cannot be edited.
Relationship type cannot be changed after creation.
Deleting an Association Label
Go to Settings > Custom Objects > Associations.
Open the three-dot menu next to the association label.
Select Delete.
Type DELETE to confirm.
Click Delete.
Important:
Deletion is irreversible.
The association label must not be in use by any records.
Active workflows using the label will stop.
FAQ
Can I delete an association label that is currently in use?
No. You must first remove all existing relationships using that label before deletion is allowed.
Are associations limited to one record per label?
No. All associations are many-to-many, with a maximum of 1,000 linked records per label.
Can I change an association from single label to paired labels?
No. You must delete the existing association label and create a new one.
Can associations be used in workflows and reporting?
Yes. Association labels can be used across workflows, filters, and record views once created.
