How the Opportunity Created Trigger Works

When a new opportunity is created manually, via automation, or through an import this trigger evaluates the opportunity against your defined filters. If the criteria match, the contact is enrolled in the workflow and your configured actions run automatically.

How to Set Up the Opportunity Created Trigger

Step 1: Create or edit a workflow

Navigate to Automation → Workflows, then either:

  • Click + Create Workflow, or

  • Open an existing workflow and select Edit Workflow from the options menu.

Step 2: Add the Opportunity Created trigger

  1. In the workflow builder, click Add New Trigger.

  2. Search for Opportunity Created under the Opportunities category.

  3. Select Opportunity Created.

Step 3: Configure trigger filters (optional but recommended)

You can refine when the trigger fires using one or more of the following filters:

  • Assigned To – Run the workflow only when an opportunity is assigned to a specific user.

  • Has Tag – Trigger automation for opportunities with specific tags.

  • In Pipeline – Limit the trigger to a particular pipeline.

  • Lead Value – Activate the workflow based on the opportunity’s monetary value.

  • Status – Filter by opportunity status (e.g., New, Open).

  • Lost Reason – Available if the opportunity is created directly with a lost status.

You may add multiple filters to create highly targeted automation logic.

Step 4: Add workflow actions

After saving the trigger, add one or more actions to automate next steps, such as:

  • Sending internal notifications

  • Assigning tasks to sales reps

  • Updating opportunity fields

  • Sending emails or SMS messages

Configure each action based on your sales or follow-up process.

Tip: We recommend reviewing our individual Workflow Action articles for detailed setup guidance.

Step 5: Save, test, and publish

  1. Click Save in the top-right corner.

  2. Toggle the workflow to Publish when ready.

  3. Use Test Workflow to confirm everything runs as expected before going live.

Note: For detailed testing guidance, see Using the Testing Features in Workflows.

Example Use Case

Frequently Asked Questions

What triggers the Opportunity Created workflow?

The workflow runs whenever a new opportunity is created in your system.

Can I filter opportunities by lead value?

Yes. You can set numeric conditions (greater than, less than, equal to) on the Lead Value field.

Can I filter by pipeline or assigned user?

Yes. You can filter by In Pipeline and Assigned To to control exactly when the workflow runs.

What actions can I automate with this trigger?

You can automate notifications, task creation, field updates, emails, SMS messages, and more.

What happens if I import multiple opportunities?

If the workflow is published, each imported opportunity that meets your filter criteria will trigger the workflow.

Best practice: Keep the workflow in Draft mode during large imports unless you want all automations to run immediately.

What’s the difference between Opportunity Created and Opportunity Changed?

  • Opportunity Created runs only once—when the opportunity is first added.

  • Opportunity Changed runs every time the opportunity is updated (stage changes, value changes, status updates, etc.).
