Who This Is For / When to Use
Use this article if you:
Want to stop automated messages once a contact replies.
Are building conversation-based or appointment-booking workflows.
What Is Stop on Response
Stop on Response is a workflow-level setting that automatically removes a contact from a workflow when they respond to a message sent by that workflow.
This prevents contacts from continuing through automation after they have already engaged.
Important Notes About Campaigns vs Workflows
Campaigns are deprecated and are no longer supported.
All automation logic, including Stop on Response, now lives inside Workflows.
New Intercom help documentation is created only for Workflows.
Where to Find Stop on Response in Workflows
Go to Automations > Workflows.
Open the workflow you want to edit.
Click the Settings tab at the top of the workflow.
Locate the Stop on response toggle under the Contact section.
How Stop on Response Works
When Stop on response is enabled:
The workflow immediately ends for a contact when they reply.
No further actions or messages in that workflow are executed.
The contact is marked as exited in workflow execution logs.
This applies only to responses made to messages sent from that specific workflow.
When You Should Use Stop on Response
Stop on Response is recommended for:
Lead nurture workflows
Appointment booking workflows
Sales follow-up sequences
Any workflow where a human reply should stop automation
Example: If a contact replies "Yes, Iโd like to book an appointment," the workflow ends and no further nurture messages are sent.
Interaction With Other Workflow Settings
Allow re-entry controls whether a contact can enter the workflow again after exiting.
If a contact responds while still enrolled, Stop on Response removes them immediately.
Appointment- or invoice-based triggers may allow re-entry even if Allow re-entry is disabled.
Common Issues and Fixes
The workflow did not stop after a reply
Confirm the reply was sent in response to a message from the same workflow.
Verify that Stop on response is enabled in Workflow Settings.
Check Execution Logs to confirm how the workflow exited.
